EWC 2026 Saudi Arabia: Why Riyadh Is Hosting the World's Biggest Esports Event

May 11, 2026.

The Esports World Cup is back in Riyadh this summer, and for the third year running, Saudi Arabia is the host country. Here's why.

Riyadh as the Permanent Home

Saudi Arabia is the official host country of the Esports World Cup, and Riyadh has been the permanent host city since the tournament's launch in 2024. This isn't a rotating event, the EWC is staying put. Boulevard Riyadh City serves as the master venue, with multiple arenas, fan zones, and festival spaces clustered into one walkable district built specifically for the seven-week tournament.

Why Saudi Arabia

The EWC is a flagship project under Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, the national strategy to diversify the economy beyond oil and grow tourism, sports, and entertainment. Esports sits at the centre of that push. The country has invested heavily in the gaming industry through the Public Investment Fund (PIF), backing tournaments, acquiring stakes in major publishers, and positioning Saudi as the global hub for competitive gaming.

The result is a tournament that's bigger than anything else in the space. EWC 2026 carries a $75 million prize pool, more than 2,000 players from 200 clubs, over 20 different games, and a seven-week production scale that no other esports event currently matches.

What This Means Beyond the Tournament

The Saudi Esports World Cup has turned Riyadh into a proper summer destination. The 2025 edition pulled around three million visitors to the city over its seven-week run, with the festival side (concerts, drone shows, food, cosplay) running alongside the matches. For GCC residents, it's a short-flight trip into one of the busiest entertainment moments on the regional calendar.
